Chronicle of the process of moving from USA to Mexico

Monday, November 22, 2004

I have been back to work now for over a month and in that time I've spent more time in the Seattle/Tacoma area than at home. During my four trips to Washington state I've been working on the project of installing automation and security equipment for a new port facility.

Embarcadero Systems (my employer) is building out the miles of cable and ample computer infrastructure that is required to control access to the 171 acre facility.

The system includes 55 or so TV cameras that allow control tower agents to see license plate numbers, chassis numbers and drivers faces as the trucks and containers come in or exit the facility.

Drivers faces are archived on a hard drive to allow the possiblity of investigating an action of interest at a later date and time.

It's still work, but I am enjoying this more than I did sitting at a desk and writing code.

Since working on this project I've been noticing the ever increasing number of TV cameras that are everywhere - traffic lights, sandwich shops, Bart trains, banks, elevator, etc. Its getting kind of scary.

I must admit however that it was kind of fun to play with the control consoles in the terminal tower and use the remote pan-tilt-zoom camera features to spy on others working on the project. Watch what you do. Someone may be watching.
